It claims that a particular region of the face is the seat of a particular domain, and then reads that region's shape, proportion and lustre. The assignment is the whole system. Change the grid and the same face produces different sentences — which is why two readers can look at one person and disagree without either of them having misread anything.","Four grids recur, with a fifth layer over them. 三停 splits the face into three horizontal bands: hairline to brow, brow to the tip of the nose, nose tip to chin. 五岳 marks five peaks — the forehead as 南岳, the nose as 中岳, the chin as 北岳, the two cheekbones as 东岳 and 西岳. 五官 gives five features bureaucratic titles: 眉 is 保寿官, 眼 is 监察官, 鼻 is 审辨官, 口 is 出纳官, 耳 is 采听官. 十二宫 lays twelve life domains over twelve regions. Over all four sits 气色, which reads lustre and colour rather than shape, and is the only layer the tradition treats as short-term.","The grids overlap, and they do not agree. The nose is 中岳 under one, 审辨官 under another, 财帛宫 under a third. A statement about the brow means something different read as 上停 than read as part of 命宫.","Then the one region the person actually asked about. A reading that begins with the question tends to answer it; a reading that begins with the face tends to describe it.","Then the person's own account. The tradition's own instruction is that the face is read alongside what the subject says about their life, not instead of it — a reading that contradicts the subject is a bad reading, not a revelation.","Then stop. A reading that keeps producing new observations after the question has been answered is generating material, not reading.
One face, read under three grids",[69,70,71,72],"Take a face with a broad, high forehead, a small nose on a low bridge, and a full, rounded chin. Under 三停 the reading is a strong 上停, a modest 中停 and a settled 下停: an early period with advantages, a middle period that did not convert them, a later period that holds.","Under 五岳 the same three facts read differently. 南岳 is high, 中岳 is low, 北岳 is full. The tradition's ideal is that the five peaks stand in proportion, so a low 中岳 against a high 南岳 is an imbalance rather than three separate verdicts — the nose is not bad, it is short against the forehead.","Under 十二宫 the nose becomes 财帛宫 and the forehead contains 官禄宫, so the same geometry becomes a statement about money and standing rather than about periods of life. None of the three readings contradicts the others; they answer different questions. The useful thing to notice is that the reader has to pick a grid before the face means anything, and the picking is where the interpretation enters.","That is also why the practice is hard to test. Second, do not read a face that has not been offered — a face is not a public document, and a reading given to someone who did not ask is a judgement phrased as an observation.","What is left after those two rules is a structured way of talking about how a person presents themselves, which is not nothing. The system grew alongside traditional Chinese medicine, which treated the face as a surface where internal state showed up: colour, sheen, tension, and the balance between features. What makes it work as a system is that the vocabulary is fixed. Given the same face, two readers trained in the same tradition arrive at broadly similar descriptions. What it is not is a measurement. Nothing in it is scored against a standard, so the same feature carries different weight depending on who is looking, and no two readings of a stranger will ever match line for line.
The three zones, and why they come first","The three zones (三停) split the face horizontally into three bands: the forehead, from brow line to hairline; the middle band, from brows to the tip of the nose; and the lower band, from nose tip to chin. The tradition attaches youth, middle age, and later life to them in that order. They come first because of proportion. Before any single feature is read, the question is whether the three bands are roughly equal in height — a long forehead with a short chin reads as a different emphasis from the reverse, and everything that follows is coloured by that. It is the first thing to check, not the most important thing, and a reader who stops at the zones has described a third of the face.
The twelve palaces: locations, not verdicts","The twelve palaces (十二宫) assign specific patches of the face to specific areas of life: overall fortune between the brows, wealth at the nose, marriage at the outer corners of the eyes, property at the upper eyelids, and so on through siblings, children, health, travel, and service. It is a map of where to look, not a score each patch carries. Each palace is read on three things — the shape underneath, the colour on top, and the sheen the tradition calls qi se (气色). And they are read as a set: a strong fortune palace with a weak wealth palace describes a different kind of life from the reverse, and neither combination is a prediction of anything.
Reading a single feature: shape, position, colour","Once the zones and palaces are set, individual features are read on three axes. Shape is the structural one — the outline, the proportion relative to the rest of the face, the symmetry between left and right. Position is where a feature sits inside its palace and whether it crowds its neighbours; a nose that fills its palace and one that leaves it half empty read differently at the same size. Colour is the surface reading, and it is the part that genuinely moves day to day with sleep, health, and weather. The tradition also pairs the five features with the five elements — brows with wood, eyes with fire, nose with earth, ears with metal, mouth with water. Treat that as a memory aid for which features get discussed together, not as a mechanism: nothing about a nose is literally earth.
Where face reading stops","Three limits are worth stating plainly. First, it has no time dimension — unlike the chart systems, face reading carries no concept of a year or a period, so it cannot say when anything happens, only where a tendency sits. Second, the face moves: weight, illness, sleep, ageing, and habitual expression all rewrite the surface within months, so any reading is a snapshot of a moving target and a reading from an old photograph describes a face that no longer exists. Third, photographs distort badly — a lens held close enlarges the nose, a high angle shortens the chin, and lighting changes colour wholesale. Use face reading as a structured way to describe tendencies and start a conversation about them, not as a way to decide anything about a person.",[146,149,160,171
[96
"three-facial-zones","The Three Facial Zones: Heaven, Human, and Earth","The three facial zones — forehead, middle band, lower band — mapped to youth, middle age and later life, and why proportion is checked before any single feature.","/pages/articles/mianxiang-san-ting.html","2026-02-08","The three zones (upper/heaven, middle/human, lower/earth) represent different life periods and aspects.
